The Colorado Adapted Physical Education Conference registration is open to everyone. The keynote speakers are Darlene Hunter, Ph.D; LMSW, MPH and Heidi Ambrosius, MA CAPE, R-DMT.
Darlene Hunter is a 3x Paralympian, 2x medalist (2016 Gold and 2020 Bronze) in Women’s Wheelchair Basketball, and advocate of adaptive sports. Darlene is also an Assistant Professor in Practice in Social Work at The University of Texas at Arlington. She has a Ph.D. in Family Studies, Masters’ in Social Work and Public Health. Darlene wrote and teaches “Disability & Social Work” teaching the importance of inclusion of those with disabilities not only in sport but in day-to-day society. Darlene acquired a spinal cord injury at the age of four and has been a para-athlete since the age of seven when she started track/road racing. Darlene made her first USA Junior Team at the age of sixteen and USA National Team at the age of 18. She went to the University of Arizona for track/road racing while obtaining her degree. While she was there she helped to start the Women’s Wheelchair Basketball program where she found her new sport to love! She went on to help The University of Texas-Arlington to start its Women’s Wheelchair Basketball program as well. Darlene has gone on to coach Dallas Junior Wheelchair Basketball Varsity Team, created the first and only free women’s wheelchair basketball camp, and other grassroots programs to increase participation opportunities for individuals with disabilities of all ages.
Heidi has been a full-time Adapted PE Specialist for the Moreno Valley Unified School District since 1998. She works primarily in early childhood adapted physical education at Rainbow Springs Preschool. Heidi received her BA in Dance from Cal State Fullerton in 1995, her MA in Dance/Movement Therapy in 1997, and her PE/APE Credentials from Cal Poly Pomona in 1999. She received her national Adapted Physical Education certification (CAPE) from APENS in 2019. She has been an adjunct professor since 2018 in the Kinesiology Adapted Physical Education program at CSU, San Bernardino, and also teaches online APE courses for CSU Bakersfield. Heidi serves on the NCPEID Membership Committee and is Co-director of the Southern California Adapted PE Consortium. Most recently, she has been invited to be the Chair of the Southern Tier of the National Academy of Health and Physical Literacy. She has a great passion for advocacy in Adapted PE, especially pertaining to early childhood. Heidi is also the State Council on Adapted Physical Education (SCAPE) Chair-Elect and the Co-Director for the 52nd National Adapted Physical Education Conference (2023)For a full list of sessions and presenters please visit the conference website.
The conference will start on May 21st in the evening, May 22nd is a full day of conference activities, and on May 23rd the conference concludes at 11:00 am to allow everyone to drive home or catch the last flight out of Montrose. School Health (formerly Palos Sports) and Gopher have donated equipment for use at the conference and it will be raffled off at the end of the conference on day three.
